Why Do Car Tyres Lose Pressure?

Tyre dealers and car tyre dealers recommend periodic tyre pressure monitoring , which is essential for several reasons; in case of loss of pressure, in fact, driving safety decreases – in particular road holding and adherence of the covers – increases fuel consumption and leads to greater wear of the tread, which will also be more exposed to risk of punctures and damage.

What are the causes of loss of pressure in tyres?

There might be several reasons:

  • faulty or damaged valve causing air to leak inside the tyre
  • incorrect positioning of the valve on the hole in the rim
  • small cuts or holes in the rubber that generate a slow loss of pressure, a different phenomenon from the drilling that usually leads to a rapid deflation
  • low temperatures : yes, in winter the loss of pressure is more frequent and to overcome this problem the inflation pressure must be slightly higher
  • penetration of the air through the components that make up the tyre
  • damage of various types to the rim, such as splitting, scratching or rusting
  • inner layer of the tyre leaking seal thus favoring the escape of air
  • possible damage to the “heel” of the rubber occurred during assembly / disassembly on the rim
  • residues of dirt or foreign bodies between the heel of the cover and the rim

All these elements could lead to not having an optimal tyre pressure , so the checks must be periodic, roughly once a month.

What is the correct inflation pressure?

The value changes according to the model of the car and to know how many atmospheres you have to inflate the tyres of your car you can check on the registration or on the inside of the cap of the tank. An aid to drivers comes from technology : starting from November 2014 , in fact, all the cars sold within the European Union must be equipped with the TPMS system, ie sensors that automatically detect the tyre pressure. Thanks to this system, specific equipment is required to provide for the disassembly and assembly of seasonal tyres, to avoid damage and ensure the correct operation of the device. Through these sensors the driver is informed if the tyre pressure is correct and if it is necessary to intervene in case of deflation. The TPMS system can be of two types, direct – offers real-time pressure information and is mounted on high-end vehicles – and indirect, on board instead of cars belonging to lower classes. This way the control and the information related to the inflation pressure are more accurate and the driver does not have to manually check the pressure level of his tyres. For all cars sold before November 2014, the control is manual and can be done by the car owner or the trusted tyre repairer.

Back-to-school Car Care Tips

September is the back-to-school month. This means for some parents driving their children back and forth to and from school. For college students it might mean driving to their faculty to attend classes and back. Some students, the ones who live not too far from their university, might use their car to go back to their hometown on weekends, which sometime can lead to 1-2 hours of driving often under the rain.

Whether you are a student or a parent, before getting back into the school routine you might want to double-check that your car is in order. Here we give some basic but essential tips to make sure your back-to-school is as smooth as possible:

  1. Tyres – Improper tyre pressure could lead to a higher consume of petrol (= less kms per litre). It can also increase wear and tear, which could force you to replace your tyres sooner than expected. It’s good practice to check your tyre pressure monthly and also to check for wear and tear by inserting an upside-down penny in the tread groove. If you can see the side top of the coin, you might need to start considering replacing the tyres.
  2. Fluids – Checking the fluids means regular oil changes but it also means checking on the transmission, brakes, coolants and last but not least the windshield wiper fluid, which needs to be topped up to ensure you have good visibility in poor weather.
  3. Seatbelts –  Wearing a seatbelt is one of the most effective ways to avoid serious injury in an accident. Airbags alone are not enough to protect you. Make sure your seatbelt is on and secured tightly across the pelvis and rib cage.
  4. Lights –  Malfunctioning headlights can impair the visibility of your car, which can bevery dangerous at night or in poor weather conditions. On the other hand, failing rear lights make it hard for other cars to see you. Turn your lights on while the car is in park, and walk around the entire vehicle to make sure your headlights, rear lights, blinkers and hazards are functioning properly. Replace any broken bulbs as soon as possible.
  5. Brakes – Worn brakes impede your ability to stop quickly and can cause your car to travel farther before coming to a halt — making it more likely you’ll find yourself in an accident. To avoid that, a professional mechanic should check your vehicle’s brakes regularly, preferably as part of a routine maintenance check performed during regular oil changes.
  6. Battery – There’s nothing worse than coming out of classes after a long day, only to find your car won’t start. If your car is sluggish to start or if the dashboard lights or radio are giving you trouble, it may be a sign you need a new battery. Also, batteries only last three to five years, so if you’ve had yours a long time, it’s probably time for a new one. Your mechanic can test your battery during routine maintenance and oil changes.

Car Maintenance Tips: Brakes

August is the last month of the Summer. It’s also the last month of holidays before students go back to school. It’s also a month many people like to take their holidays in. Whether you are taking your holidays in August or not, it’s probably a good time (it’s always a good time!) to do a quick check up to make sure your car brakes are ready for the challenge.

Brake pad wear
On many vehicles, you can check your brake pads by looking through the spaces in the wheel rims. If the outer pad is less than ¼-inch thick, the pads need to be replaced. The longer you wait, the more you risk causing expensive damage to other parts of the brake system.

Squealing, screeching, scraping or grinding noises
When your brake pads get thin, a metal wear indicator on the pad emits a high-pitched squeal that lets you know it’s time to have your brakes checked (before any damage is done). But if you hear the grinding or scraping sound of metal-on-metal, it could mean you’ve waited too long and you’re damaging the rotors every time you brake. Get to a service station as soon as possible.

Decreased stopping power
If the brakes are “mushy” or feel like they’re sinking to the floor when you press on the pedal, you might have a leak in the air hose or brake fluid line.

The car vibrates or pulls to one side when braking
While these symptoms have a variety of possible causes, they could indicate warped rotors, uneven wear on the brake pads or other brake-related problems that need to be addressed by a trained mechanic.

Car Maintenance Tips for the Summer

The Summer is here, and what better way to spend it than out on the open road. It’s the perfect time to pack up the car, strap your loved ones in safely and head off on that much longed for road trip. Before getting all packed up it is most important that your car is Summer ready.

ZEETEX UK have compiled a list of some simple Summer Car Maintenance tips that will make sure you are ready to hit the road.

Keep your cool: Staying cool is important not just for you, but also for your car.  Beyond checking the level of coolant fluid in your car, be sure to inspect the state of the hoses and coolant reservoir to keep an eye out for leaks.

Check your engine belts: There is usually a serpentine belt that runs between the alternator, the fan and several other components. It can deteriorate, become loose, start to squeal, and sometimes just break for no apparent reason. It needs to be in good condition and at the right amount of tension. If you see cracks in the belt or small pieces missing, it’s time to replace the belt.

Stay hydrated: It is as important for the car to stay hydrated as it is the passengers. Beyond checking the level of coolant fluid in your car, be sure to inspect the state of the hoses and coolant reservoir to keep an eye out for leaks.  Check oil, brake, power-steering and windshield-washer fluids regularly. These liquids never stop being used and consumed.

Check the brakes: How are the brakes on your car feeling in general? Are they lacking in bite? Feeling a bit spongy? If so, new pads and a system bleed might be required. This is the kind of maintenance you should have your mechanic or dealership take care of.

Make sure your wipers are working properly: Whether there is a heatwave or monsoon rain, make sure your wipers are working adequately. If the wipers are worn they can affect your driving vision. This can be a fiddly operation so perhaps ask your mechanic/dealer to do this for you.

Tyre Pressure: High temperature and climate can deflate car tyres. Check each tyre frequently and add air as necessary for a safer trip. Check your manual for levels specific to your vehicle, treads should be free of stones, stray nails and the like, and all four should be in good condition. Good condition means no cracks, no uneven wear (this might be caused by a suspension problem) and plenty of tread depth. And make sure to check your spare tyre too.

Keep the driver and passengers cool and hydrated too: It can get hot out there so make sure everyone’s cool and hydrated. Make sure to check your air-conditioning is working properly, and when parked up for a while, try to find shade, so the car stays cool,  to make it a comfortable journey for everyone. It’s better to make a few more bathroom breaks and stretch your legs than to end up cranky and tired.

To drive safely and in full comfort on your Summer road trip, make sure your car is equipped with ZEETEX tyres. Why not fit your car with ZEETEX ZT4000 4S – All Seasons

Four Ways to Increase the Comfort in Your Car

Seat Position

If your seat is adjusted, meaning you don’t need to stretch your legs to reach the pedals or crane your neck to see out of the window, you’ll avoid a lot of physical stress and ultimately travel more comfortably.

According to experts, maximum comfort is reached when you center yourself in the middle of the seat. If you are positioned correctly neither the front edge of the seat should hit the back of your knees nor you will have to extend your foot to reach the pedals.

Tidy Up

This is similar to living in a tidy and clean house versus a messy and dirty one. Empty cans, plastic bottles, napkins or any other item that doesn’t belong there are not only annoying and increase your level of stress and sicomfort but they are also likely to put your safety at risk.

Microfibre Towel

Inexpensive items such as a microfibre towel can make a big difference in your level of comfort behind the wheel. For example, you can use the towel to keep your windshield and rearview mirror clean. Having a good view of everything around you has a positive effect in the driver’s overall confidence and well-being.

Mute the Noise

Noise is probably one of the most irritating things when it comes to driving. Some suspicious noises in the car might well be the sign that you need to do that long-overdue maintenance but some other noises can be the effect of a noisy car, which more often is the sign of bad, noisy tyres.

If you are looking for ultra-silent tyres, you have to try Zeetex HP 1000 whose serrations on the groove wall reduce pipe resonance noise making it an ultra-silent tire. To find out more, visit: https://zeetextyres.co.uk/tyres/passenger-car-tyres/hp1000/

Is Your Car Ready for the Summer?

Whether you are planning a long or short trip by car, the coming of the Summer is always a good time for doing a bit of maintenance for the car.

It’s easier for you to get ready for the Summer than it is for your car. OK, maybe there is a little diet involved but that aside your car will definitely require more than pulling out your tank top, bathing suit of flip flops.

Summer car maintenance is critically important. That’s why we want to give you a list of things to look at

Some of the items on the list can be checked by yourself, while others might need the assistance of a mechanic. If you are not sure, it’s always best to pay a visit to your local garage and get the car checked out.

Coolant System

As you would probably expect, both your car’s coolant and radiator do a lot of overtime in the Summer. The coolant system keeps your car from overheating but also guards it against corrosion and lubricates your water pump.

Checking your coolant system means checking your radiator, water pump, cooling fans and the likes. You certainly don’t want to be stuck on the side of the road because you neglected to service your coolant system and the engine overheated.

Battery

It’s common for batteries to fail when in the presence of sudden changes from hot to cold weather and vice versa. Batteries have a liquid which evaporates during hot temperatures. As a result, the battery life gets shorter. It’s also very important that you get your battery checked, if you want to avoid any unpleasant surprise before or during your Summer holidays.

Tyres

Checking the tyres means checking the tread. Poor tyre treads negatively influence your car stopping distance and overall maneuverability. It’s also good practice to rotate your tyres and often check their pressure as sudden changes in the temperature can cause your tyres to lose pressure more quickly.

It goes without saying that when it comes to tyres, it’s also vitally important choosing the right ones. If you are looking for high-quality summer tyres at an affordable price, Zeetex tyres are very popular with many motorists. Particularly, you should check out Zeetex HP 2000vfm.

Its reinforced design gives more resistance and wide transverse grooves helps in overall aerodynamics.

Tickets for this event are available at https://www.driftgames.life/products/idc-round-2-2018-event-tickets

If you are arriving by car please be aware that for this event, there is strictly no public parking at the event venue. Any parking at the event venue itself is reserved for Irish Drift Championship staff only.

If you are attending the event as a spectator, the town of Dún Laoghaire has multiple paid car parks which are located at the Lexicon, the Pavilion, Dún Laoghaire shopping centre, IMC Cinema and Bloomfield’s Shopping Centre and are all a 5-10 minute walk at most to the event venue.

Alternatively, as Dún Laoghaire railway station is located just 30 seconds from the gates of the event venue, we do recommend using Irish Rail’s DART service to travel to the event.
